Getting older – the importance of physical fitness as we age

May 19, 2016

I had a birthday this week. Getting older makes you think about your life. I consider my fitness as an important part of my life.

“No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.”

– Socrates

As we age we get shorter and weaker. Our bones get brittle and we slowly but inevitably slide downward. Eventually we slide down so far we end up underground.

Because of this I think it’s crucial to get fit early in life. The stronger you are when you are younger pays dividends tenfold when you are older.

Let’s say our overall health and fitness ranges from 0 (dead) to 100 (perfectly fit). If you start out in your 20’s and you are a 100, you can slide down to 90 in your 30’s and down even further as you age. If you start out in your 20’s as a 50 you can find yourself getting sick and feeble prematurely.

Don’t be an amateur with your strength and fitness. The best time to start making improvements is now.
